Have you had that "Oops" feeling when you clicked on a link you shouldn't have? Or heard a friend's horror story about having their identity stolen online? Safely navigating the online world is more like crossing a busy street in Toronto.
You might think that cybersecurity has to do with complicated technological aspects. Well, it's not! It's about keeping your digital life as cozy and secure as your home. Whether it's ordering poutine at your favourite restaurant or streaming a hockey game, we do almost everything online these days. And just as we close our doors at night, we must also close our online presence.
Imagine cybersecurity as your personal online bodyguard. This bodyguard protects you from sneaky people trying to spy on your digital life. Think of it as having a very strong lock on your email, social media, and bank accounts. It's not as complex as it seems, I promise!
Well, you know those emails that say you won a million dollars or inherited a fortune from a distant relative? Yes, those are the bad guys trying to trick you. Most people in Ontario have seen lots of these over the years. If something feels too good to be true, it probably is!
Here are some simple tips: Use passwords that are unique for each website, and change them every now and then. If they are complicated you can change them less frequently. Be careful with connecting to free Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi can be risky, so try to do banking and other important things at home. And always keep your devices up to date! Tech devices will sometimes get updates from their manufacturer, and it's best to update when available.
You can think of your personal data as your assets. You don't leave your belongings out in the open for anyone to grab. Always be aware of what you share, and who you share it with. If it doesn't have to be uploaded or shared, then sometimes it's best to keep it off the internet.
First of all, don't panic: it's like slipping on ice; It happens, but you have to get back up. Change your passwords, notify the necessary people (like your bank), and you can call us if you'd like as well. We are all in this together!
We're more than great Internet.
